We're All In It Together

2011
Written & Directed by Ross Bull
Illustrations by Helen Macdonald

In early 2011 the UK government were hard at work implementing a devastating program of cuts.  While taxpayers were forced to bailout failing banks, Chief Executives continued to walk away with multi-million pound bonuses.  Public services had their budgets slashed, while the Prime Minister flew arms dealers half way round the world to profit from human misery.  It was against this backdrop that the TUC launched their 2011 60 second ad contest.

Our entry, 'We're All In It Together', received a highly commended award and was screened before thousands at the March For The Alternative rally in Hyde Park and at the Curzon Cinema in London.

Starter Packs Angus is a charity based in Arbroath who provide basic household essentials to people in housing need.  This film was commissioned by SPA to explain the help available, particularly to migrant workers increasingly finding themselves at risk of homelessness.

'A Good Start' was translated into several languages and was shown to migrant workers on local farms.  It also helped to secure alternative funding for SPA at a time when their income from the local authority was under threat.

Something Out, Something In
2007
Filmed, edited & directed by Ross Bull
Production assistance by Helen Macdonald & Ken Bull
Original score by Stormbox Studios

Volunteering is often conceived as something that people do in charity shops but as the staff and volunteers at Volunteer Centre Angus prove, it's a whole lot more.

Volunteers come from all walks of life and volunteer for a wide variety of reasons.  This film is features some of those people who tell remarkable stories of where they've come from, where they've been and the difference they've made to their own lives and to the lives of others.

The History Of The Smokie
2005
Written, directed, filmed & edited by Ross Bull
Original score by Stormbox Studios

This fascinating documentary has been distributed worldwide, including a screening aboard the Yell ferry in the Shetland Isles.  'The History of the Smokie' charts the history of this famous fish delicacy which originated in the tiny fishing village of Auchmithie, 3 miles north of it's current hometown of Arbroath.  The film features some really special old photographs from the Fraser Collection showing both Auchmithie and Arbroath when the fishing industry was at it's height as well as a cookery demonstration and an insight into a modern fishhouse.

Destination Montrose
2004
Filmed and presented by Ross Bull
2nd camera & editing by David Mudie

Produced in 2004 for Montrose Hertiage Trust, 'Destination Montrose' covers a wide range of subjects throughout this historic Scottish town.

Featuring the impressive birdlife of Montrose Basin, a hair-raising ride aboard the local lifeboat and a more sedate look at some of the town's historic streets and buildings, 'Destination Montrose' packs a lot into 30 minutes.

This was one of the first films I worked on after graduation and was a lot of fun to make.
